Accelerating TB Diagnosis with Artificial Intelligence

The Project

We are developing and validating an AI-based diagnostic tool capable of analyzing chest X-ray images to identify signs of tuberculosis in under 5 minutes. This technology is designed to work in areas with limited access to radiologists, enabling earlier diagnosis and treatment where it’s needed most.

The system builds on successful international studies combining portable X-ray machines with embedded AI software, now adapted and tested in the Mozambican context.

Implementation & Partnerships

  • Pilot Phase (2025): The project is currently in validation, analyzing over 1,000 chest X-rays in collaboration with Maputo Central Hospital
  • Focused on scaling the solution to underserved areas across the country
  • Developed with clinical input from local healthcare workers and specialists

  • Early and accurate TB detection, reducing transmission and mortality
  • Strengthens public health surveillance in high-burden regions
  • Bridges the human resource gap by offering diagnostic support where radiologists are unavailable

Future Outlook

Following successful validation, we aim to deploy the solution nationally with support from public health agencies and NGOs. This model may also be replicated for other diseases such as pneumonia or lung cancer using similar imaging data.
